SECTOR UPDATE

TORO NATION Welcomes Constructive Engagement with the New National Arts Council Leadership

Issued by TORO NATION

TORO NATION wishes to update the cultural and creative sector on a significant engagement held today with the newly appointed National Arts Council (NAC) Accounting Authority, Mr Lebogang Mogoera.

The meeting provided an important opportunity for open, honest and solution-oriented discussions on the current state of the National Arts Council and its relationship with artists, cultural practitioners and the broader creative sector.

TORO NATION expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr. Mogoera for creating space for meaningful engagement. His willingness to listen, acknowledge existing challenges and demonstrate a commitment to rebuilding the relationship between the National Arts Council and the sector represents a positive step towards restoring confidence in the institution.

During the engagement, TORO NATION presented a range of recommendations, proposals and practical suggestions aimed at addressing longstanding concerns affecting artists and cultural practitioners. The discussion focused on improving governance, strengthening communication, rebuilding trust and ensuring that the National Arts Council becomes more responsive to the needs of the sector it serves.

TORO NATION further encouraged the National Arts Council leadership to deepen its direct engagement with artists and cultural practitioners across all provinces of South Africa, rather than relying exclusively on organisations that claim to represent the sector. Meaningful consultation with practitioners on the ground will contribute to more informed decision-making, greater transparency and policies that reflect the realities experienced by creatives.

The movement believes that rebuilding trust between the National Arts Council and the cultural and creative sector will require consistent dialogue, accountability and genuine collaboration. Today's engagement is recognised as an encouraging first step towards achieving these objectives.

TORO NATION looks forward to working constructively with Mr. Lebogang Mogoera and the National Arts Council Management in pursuit of a more transparent, inclusive and accountable institution that serves the interests of all South African artists and cultural practitioners.

As an advocacy group, TORO NATION remains committed to championing meaningful reform, stronger governance and a National Arts Council that places the needs and aspirations of the country's cultural and creative sector at the centre of its work.

Together, we can rebuild trust, strengthen the sector and create a National Arts Council that truly serves all artists.
