TRAIN, GROW, AND EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS AS A PERFORMER

Why Young Actors Should Respond to Opportunities Like the Ticket to the Moon Casting Call

By Thami akaMbongo Manzana

In South Africa, opportunities for young actors remain incredibly scarce. Many of us work in an industry that is largely unregulated and project-based, meaning most performers survive from one gig to the next. Unlike other professions with predictable employment, actors often face long periods without work, income, or stability.

For this reason, when a structured opportunity such as a Young Touring Company emerges, it deserves serious attention and support from the theatre community. The reality is that having a contract where you know that for a certain period you will receive a regular payment brings something many artists rarely experience: security. Even if temporary, it allows a performer to plan their life, manage responsibilities, and focus on developing their craft without constantly worrying about the next job.

Another important aspect of such companies is artistic growth. Being part of a young repertory company exposes actors to different forms of theatre. In this case, the repertoire includes William Shakespeare productions and other theatrical works, which require discipline, vocal skill, and strong acting technique. Performing in a repertory system trains actors to become versatile performers, able to move between styles, characters, and performance demands.

Working in a touring ensemble also teaches something essential that is sometimes overlooked in our industry: teamwork and discipline. Theatre is collaborative by nature, and touring companies require actors to work closely together, support each other, and maintain professional standards consistently. This kind of environment nurtures young artists and prepares them for the broader demands of the industry.

There is also an interesting paradox within the performing arts. Sometimes when an actor finally secures a stable contract, other tempting opportunities may suddenly appear—perhaps a television or film role. While these can be exciting, it is important to weigh such decisions carefully and think about longer-term sustainability and professional growth.

Across South Africa, there are very few successful young touring companies, yet these platforms have historically played an important role in shaping skilled performers and theatre practitioners. They create space for actors to grow, travel, perform regularly, and gain invaluable stage experience.

For young actors in Johannesburg, opportunities like the Ticket to the Moon Young Touring Company should be taken seriously. It is a chance not only to work, but also to train, grow, and expand your horizons as a performer.

I strongly encourage young actors to respond to this call, apply, and experience what such a company can offer. Sometimes the most valuable step in an artistic career is simply saying yes to the opportunity to grow.
